Kindergarten is an important year of schooling as children formally begin to develop their literacy and numeracy skills. Our whole school community will help your child adjust to school and help them to feel comfortable.
We are very pleased to welcome your child to Wideview Public School. Our philosophy is a simple one – happy children learn more effectively. So we set out to provide a rich, warm but challenging learning environment where students want to learn.
When to start school
Your child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five on or before 31 July in that year. By law, all children must be enrolled in school by their sixth birthday. When to start your child at school is an individual decision. You may want to discuss this with us or with your child's preschool teacher.

Wideview’s Kindergarten Orientation Program
To help each child experience a positive start to Kindergarten, Wideview operates an extensive Kindergarten Orientation Program. There are three components:
- Kinderlinks transition to school program
- Parent Expo
- Buddy program
Kinderlinks Transition to School Program
Our Kinderlinks transition to school program will operate in Term 4 for three weeks.
The aim of Kinderlinks is to give children an early understanding of the school’s routines and its physical layout. It also provides parents with an opportunity to meet parents of other children and become familiar with school staff. Over the 3 weeks, the children will become comfortable in the school environment and meet some new friends with whom they will be attending school in 2025. Please click here for further information.
Buddy Program
The buddy program is another initiative, which has been embraced by our school community over many years.
At Kinderlinks, your child will be introduced to his or her 'buddy'. Their buddy will be a child from one of the older primary classes (usually year 5), whose role is to be a friend and look after your child in the playground, once he or she starts school.
This program provides dual benefits:
- Older children learn leadership and mentoring skills and have the opportunity to nurture their younger buddy.
- Kindergarten children will have a familiar face, someone to look after him or her when you are not around, and someone to play with during those first few weeks until he or she begins to establish his or her own group of friends.
The benefits of the buddy program continue throughout the children’s school experience through the Kindergarten to Year 6 peer support program.
Best Start Kindergarten Interview
The best start interview is a tool to help teachers assess your child's skills as they enter school, and to tailor teaching to their individual needs. Teachers will sit with your child when they start school to assess your child's literacy and numeracy skills so that they can develop an appropriate teaching program that caters for your child.
